중외통보는 조선에서 만든 것인지 아니면 중국에서 만든 것인지는 아직까지 풀리지 않은 수수께끼입니다. 중국 화폐로 보는 이도 있지만  중외통보 도안을 보면 우리나라 대표전인 태극과 팔쾌도가 있는 것 뿐 아니고 액면(兩)도 우리나라 화폐와 동일합니다. 한국 기록에 따르면 1884년에 전환국에서 제조하고 중국과 무역하려고 만들었다고 합니다. 중국 기록에 따르면, 1854년부터 1858년까지 상해점 주전소에서 중외통보 은화가 제작되었습니다. 1910년 영국조폐공사 서류에 따르면, 이 중국의 중외통보를 제조하기 위해 영국조폐공사는 Tael, Half-Tael, 1/5 Tael, 1/10 Tael, 및 1/20 Tael로 5개의 중외통보 다이를 준비했습니다. 1910년의 출처이지만 출처속에 있는 사진은 분명이 우리가 알소 있는 1884년의 중외통보입니다. 이 영국 자료는 중국의 주장을 뒷받침합니다. 앞으로 많은 연구가 필요 하는 것 같습니다. PCGS사는 중외통보를 중국화폐고 판단합니다.

Whether this coin is Chinese or Korean is still a mystery, and both countries claim it as their own. From Korea's perspective the design of the coin, showing Taeguk and trigrams, is quite Korean. The face value of the coin, Ryang or Nyang, was also a Korean currency at the time. According to Korean records, this coin was produced at the Central Government Mint in 1884. However, according to Chinese record, these coins were produced in Shanghai from 1854 to 1858 with the help of the Royal Mint of England. According to the 1910 Catalog of the Coins, Tokens, Medals, Dies, and Seals in the Museum of the Royal Mint, Volume 2: Dies, Medals, and Seals, the Royal Mint prepared ten dies for five Chinese coins: Tael, Half-Tael, 1/5 Tael, 1/10 Tael, and 1/20 Tael. Although this catalog was from 1910, the dies showed in this catalogue match the 1800s Jungoe Tongbo that Korea also claims. More research needs to be conducted on this coin. PCGS recognizes these coins as Chinese.
